Services
Mullan Grid Consulting can advise on all phases of connecting renewable generation from concept to commissioning. During the connection process we can also step-in with our expertise to assist with specific tasks such as investor due diligence.
Technical Advisor
Our primary role for our clients is acting as the grid engineer for their projects. We proactively move a generator’s connection through the connection offer, pre-construction and construction process. With an expert knowledge of the technical, commercial and regulatory requirements, we aim to deliver the grid connection for our clients with the lowest timelines and costs.
Feasibility Studies
At an early stage in the project cycle we can provide an expert opinion on the likely connection method, costs and timelines. Depending on the detail required this can take the format of an informal chat, email or a more detailed report. A typical MullanGrid feasibility report would undertake a review of the proposed connection method, and identify any risks that could obstruct the generators connection.
Connection Applications
Our engineers have experience of completing connection applications for all renewable technologies in both Ireland and Northern Ireland. Once an application is submitted we can manage the interaction with the System Operators through the connection offer process.
Connection Modifications
Our Engineers have experience dealing with a range of connection modification requests for all renewable technologies to both the DSO and TSO in Ireland.
Connection Offer Reviews
By managing the application through the connection offer process we can ensure that the offer issued meets the developer’s requirement. If required we can manage further interactions with the system operator and if required submit any dispute to the Regulator. The purpose of the connection offer review will be to optimise the grid connection method with respect to reducing the overall connection costs and timelines.
Commercial and Regulation
Our engineers have been active over the last 10 years in the development of connection policy for renewable generation in ROI and NI. With this expert knowledge we can help to use the existing policies and rules to optimise your connection method, costs and timelines. We can also advise on constraint and curtailment policy. As connection policy continues to develop we can advise on upcoming changes and if required draft responses to consultations from the regulators.

Due Diligence
With our knowledge of all aspects of connecting renewables in Ireland and Northern Ireland we are very well placed to advise investors during the due diligence process. Our engineers have experience of completing due diligence on the grid connection of over 2000MW of renewable generation for equity, debt and bank investors.
Curtailment Analysis
Curtailment is an emerging issue on the island of Ireland due to the relatively high level of renewables planned to connect to the system. We have developed models for analysing curtailment levels over the next ten year period for both wind and bio-energy generation.
Training
We can provide training courses on all of the technical, commercial and regulatory aspects of grid connections. Training courses are delivered by Rory Mullan and have previously been completed both in the UK and Ireland. Rory regularly provides training programmes for the IWEA Wind Skillnet programmes.
Small Wind
MullanGrid can advise on the grid connection of small scale generators in Northern Ireland. Due to the high level of projects connecting to the NIE network there are a number of issues emerging relating to the connection of small scale generation in Northern Ireland. MullanGrid can provide a review of the likelihood of connecting your generator early on in your project.
